Magnification Bias in Galactic Microlensing Searches

چکیده

It is shown that a significant amount of detectable gravitational microlensing events that could potentially be found by MAssively Parallel Photometry (MAPP) projects (such as the MACHO, EROS and OGLE collaborations) will occur for stars too dim to be easily noticed individually by these projects. This is the result of a large magnification bias effect, a bias of including high magnification events in any flux-limited sample. The probability of detecting these events may be as high as 2.3 times the lensing probability of stars currently being monitored by MAPP collaborations. The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

Microlensing Searches for Extrasolar Planets: Current Status and Future Prospects

I review results from, and future prospects for, microlensing searches for extrasolar planets. Analyses of well-sampled microlensing light curves by several collaborations have demonstrated that current searches are sensitive to ∼> 1MJ planets with few AU separations from M dwarfs in the Galactic bulge. To date, however, no unambiguous planetary detections have been made. Detailed analysis has ...

Planet Sensitivity from Combined Ground- and Space-based Microlensing Observations

To move one step forward toward a Galactic distribution of planets, we present the first planet sensitivity analysis for microlensing events with simultaneous observations from space and the ground. We present this analysis for two such events, OGLE-2014-BLG-0939 and OGLE-2014-BLG-0124, which both show substantial planet sensitivity even though neither of them reached high magnification. This s...

Quasar-microlensing versus star-microlensing evidence of small-planetary-mass objects as the dominant inner-halo galactic dark matter

We examine recent results of two kinds of microlensing experiments intended to detect galactic dark matter objects, and we suggest that the lack of short period star-microlensing events observed for stars near the Galaxy does not preclude either the “rogue planets” identified from quasar-microlensing by Schild 1996 as the missing-mass of a lens galaxy, or the “Primordial Fog Particles” (PFPs) i...

Discovering Galactic Planets by Gravitational Microlensing: Magnification Patterns and Light Curves

The current searches for microlensing events towards the galactic bulge can be used to detect planetary companions around the lensing stars. The effect of such planets is a short-term modulation on the smooth microlensing lightcurve produced by the main lensing star. Current and planned experiments should be sensitive enough to discover planets ranging from Jupiter mass down to Earth mass. In o...
